Schools

The children of the mixed-marriages of the Chinese communities were educated alongside other children from the area. Many attended Dingle Street School off Poplar High Street, or Gill Street School.

They experienced a certain amount of racist name-calling by the other children but mostly integrated well.

The standard curriculum gave no scope for the Eurasian children to learn anything of Chinese language, life or culture so in the 1930s Irene Ho Tung set up The Chung Hwa Club, a school to teach Chinese and something of the culture and history.
